The Almanack

Three weeks ago, I found an interesting position at n8n. The job description has prompted me, like any other candidate, to try and play with the actual product before applying. As I am not in a rush and I am trying to choose my team and job wisely, as I choose my life partners, I took a couple of days to think about it (in today’s market, this is not the best idea if you want to actually land the job). ...

How to Hire a Data Person in the AI Era

Why is everyone now disappointed by the hiring process nowadays, and how does one hire the best match for their data team? I’ll be honest, I want to know the answer to this question myself. I have interviewed candidates for the DE position, and I’ve written those JDs myself. However, the industry is evolving so fast that it is hard to keep up, especially when you have other tasks on your plate. AI is now handling much of the process, and you are keeping old habits while interviewing people: they are effective, quick, and supposed to be fair to everyone. But many would disagree. ...

Is it a Bubble yet?

Yesterday I was trying to figure out if we are looking at the AI Bubble, or if it is a sustainable way of making a business. The answer I found was scarier than another financial crisis. Last 4 years of my personal life were quite challenging, and I know precisely that our overall experience changed drastically somewhere around first 2 weeks of worldwide quarantine. And behind the curtains of those inconceivable events we missed something much more important — collectively, we missed the race of being the most intelligible creatures. ...

You Are Not Inclusive

I’ve been browsing various websites lately, particularly those of companies I’m interested in. Many of them, of course, show their commitment to inclusivity and non-discrimination precisely on their landing pages. However, when it comes to actions, you see other things. You start noticing “IQ” tests that seem unsuitable for some conditions, like dyslexia. Then there is reducing flexibility in working hours, even though a couple of years ago, they promised all of their employees that they would be free to ride their children to school and back home any time they want, still working 8 hours per day. You see them not being open to autistic people. Then there’s the cultural toxicity towards LGTBQ+ individuals based on their “non-professional” appearance. You see buildings with perpetually out-of-order elevators because of budget cuts. ...

The Epic of Two AIs: Art, Intrigue and Technology

Originally published on LinkedIn. The cover image was created using images generated by Shedevrum and DALL-E 2. I’m Yulia Afletunova, and I’ve been working with data broadly for over five years. I started as a product manager, which was based on AI technology. I had time to be an ML engineer, and for almost four years, I have focused on the product side of data analysis. In autumn, I came up with the idea of making a model that would use art images to determine a work’s authorship. Of course, I went to study existing solutions, and so I came across one very interesting story. ...
